Is it safe to let AI change my live website?
Short answer
Yes, but only inside limits agreed before it starts. Three things make it safe: exactly what it may change is written down in advance, every change is checked automatically so a broken one cannot go live, and each change is made separately so it can be undone in seconds without disturbing anything else.
Safety is about the setup, not the cleverness
The instinct is to ask whether the AI is clever enough to be trusted. That is the wrong question, because the answer changes every few months and you cannot check it yourself.
A better question: what is the worst thing this could do to my website, and how fast can it be undone? Get the answer to that right and cleverness becomes a matter of how well it performs, not whether it is dangerous.
The three levels
Things it just does. Mechanical, instantly reversible, with no wording involved: fixing links that lead nowhere, keeping your page list accurate, stopping pictures making the page jump about, repairing labels that have stopped working. There is no version of these jobs that you would want done differently.
Things it asks about first. Anything that changes what your business says: your headline in Google, the wording on a page, a new page, a change to a form. These come to you with the reasoning attached, and nothing happens until you say yes.
Things it never touches. Your prices, your guarantees, your legal wording, claims about your business, and the settings that decide whether Google is allowed to show your site at all. One wrong move on that last one can remove your entire website from Google, and you would not notice for weeks. That is far too much damage to hand over, at any level of confidence.
Being able to undo it beats being careful
A cautious system you cannot undo is more dangerous than a bolder one you can. Every change should stand on its own, so putting it back takes seconds and disturbs nothing else — and there should be a single instruction that stops everything, which does not depend on one particular person being at their desk.
Worth asking any provider: before you start, will you take a full copy of my site as it is now, and will you give it back if I ask?
